The Falcons wrapped up their preseason Thursday night at home with a big second quarter in which they scored 17 unanswered points that saw a strong performance by Terron Ward who is trying to secure third on the depth chart in the running game. His runs erased Jacksonville’s early lead as they finish the preseason at 3-1.
Ward led Falcon runners with 62 yards on 22 carries as it was reserves night at the Georgia Dome. Matt Ryan, Devota Freeman and company saw only one snap and confirmed second string Matt Schaub completed his only pass before giving way to Matt Simms. Simms was 16-of-23 for 217 yards but he threw two interception neither of which was technically his fault as tight end Austin Hopper let the ball in both cases go through his hands as he fights for a roster spot at Atlanta had five tight ends on the schedule going into the game.
Atlanta’s defense looked promising as they caused a couple of turnovers as well as sacking Jacksonville QB Brandon Allen twice as they showed extra aggressiveness as they prepare for their season opener next Sunday at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Falcons have a lot of decisions to make between now and Saturday when they have to finalize their 53-man roster. I don’t have much faith in this coaching staff this season. I have a feeling their going to keep two many players at one or two positions, many who won’t see the light of day. It will be curious to see what happens.
The Falcons kickoff their final season at the Georgia Dome on September 11 before moving to the new Mercedes Benz Dome next season. Let’s hope they leave on a good note.
