It wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination but the Chattanooga Football Club won their conference title 2-1 Saturday at Finley Stadium over Memphis City.
Friday’s semi-final matchup saw the winners win by a combined total of 8-0. It was nobody’s guess what was in store Saturday. Was it going to be a defensive struggle or a high scoring affair? Fans on hand got to see a lot of ball movement and great defense by both goalkeepers.
Samuel Goni’s header into the goal past Memphis City goalkeeper with under a minute in regulation put an end to a game of action and suspense.
The game saw a lot of momentum swings as both teams remained scoreless 30 minutes into the match. Chattanooga got on the board first thanks to a goal by Luke Winter following a great pass by John Carrier.
Towards the end of the half Memphis City started pressing hard and with seconds before the half were in a position to tie the score with a penalty kick. CFC goalkeeper Greg Hartley saved the day as he stopped the kick.
The momentum continued in the second half for Memphis City as they used ball control and kept the CFC defenders on their heels. And finally at the 72:29 mark Memphis City tied the score on a Luke Parker rebound goal after Hartley blocked a shot on goal.
As time started to run down Chattanooga finally started to show their muscle and kept putting pressure on Memphis City’s defenders with the payoff coming with under a minute thanks to Goni literally using his head.
With the win Chattanooga wins their conference and continue to the next round in an attempt to win the National Premier Soccer League championship.
